This dissertation investigates the gender differences in children’s play between the ages of 4 and 5 within a primary school setting. More specifically, it discusses the gender differences in the way boys and girls play and suggests how such differences may develop through play. Theories including Social Learning Theory are discussed to gain an in-depth understanding of how children learn.
Teachers' perceptions of play were described and analysed with respect to their definition of play, roles and values of play in relation to children's learning, and the use of play in teaching.
